Clichés are one the most predictable ways of writing ever. Most people know what clichés mean, but they’re so familiar they aren’t interesting AT ALL! Writing creatively is about reaching for fresher language and meaning. When you write, you want your words to have impact, but they won’t if you’re relying on the same, tired phrases that already exist and that have already been used.
Just to refresh your memory on those clichés which we often use, have a look at the following:
- Laughter is the best medicine
- From bad to worse
- Use it or lose it
- Caught between a rock and a hard place
- Time is money
- No pain, no gain
- A taste of his own medicine
- Survival of the fittest
- Love is blind
·
Now that you have sparked your memory and thought about how less impactful these phrases are, try to STAY AWAY from them and not “try a cliché...“
