I was watching a TV programme earlier today talking about the link between Culture/Tradition and Christianity. I found it really interesting in the sense that people have different views on the topic at hand. The presenter of the show interviewed a few people regarding the issue on whether there was a link between the two or there was no link at all.
The first person interviewed was a bishop of some church in Polokwane. He mentioned that there is no way that the two can mix or have a link. He mentioned that in the bible it states that people should not worship any foreign Gods besides the one from the heavens.
The second interviewed was a Theology lecturer from a university in Pretoria. He gave his opinion from a black person’s point of view. He went on to say if one is black and does not believe in their ancestors and perform traditional/cultural rituals, one has a problem. He posed an interesting question on what black/ who black people believed in before colonization took over the Africa.
As much as both interviewees gave their opinions on the matter, it still leaves me with much confusion as how the two link. I believe in God and I also believe in my ancestors. I feel that both play a huge role in shaping my life and giving me direction.
